All over the country the annual spring science fair ritual is being disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Regional and State science fairs are held in March and April and many students will have the opportunity to qualify for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) currently still scheduled for May 10th through 15th. Given the current quarantine restrictions in place nationwide, any science fair that takes place will have to be done virtually. Here in Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiʻi Academy of Science (HAS), a non-profit agency attached to the University of Hawaiʻi, runs the state science fair and this year the Hawaiʻi State Science and Engineering Fair (HSSEF) will take place virtually. In my class then, we did a Do Now for the first five minutes. In this lesson, we are covering the background information and starting the research, then the students will have four more days to complete the project. My students all had 1:1 Chromebooks which were perfect for this assignment.
